What is LEEDŽ?

The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design™) rating system is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings.

LEED® encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria. LEED® recognizes achievements and promotes expertise in sustainable building through a comprehensive system offering project certification, professional accreditation, training and practical resources. The LEED® rating system has become the industry-leading process by which to document and validate sustainable building design and construction practices. A project must adhere to minimum program requirements, or possess minimum characteristics in order to be eligible under LEED® 2009.  Prerequisites and credits in the LEED® 2009 edition address seven topics:
  • Sustainable sites
  • Water efficiency
  • Energy and atmosphere
  • Materials and resources
  • Indoor environmental quality
  • Innovation in design
  • Regional priority.

Individuals recognized for their knowledge of the LEED® rating system are permitted to use the LEED® Accredited Professional (AP) acronym after their name, indicating they have passed the accreditation exam given by the Green Building Certification Institute (a third-party organization that handles accreditation for the United States Green Building Council).
